PATGATI MEMORIAL GHAT

The Patgati Memorial Ghat and Information Center, located on the bank of the Madhumati River, is a historic site that has remained underutilized for decades. Monofunctional activities like boat docking and river-based transportation of goods have, over the years, caused the site to decay from extensive flooding and erosion.

The design proposal transforms the riverfront into an indoor information center and an outdoor contemplation space extending towards the river and terminating in a natural slope. A shallow pond surrounded by the national flower of Bangladesh, the “Water Lily”, forms the heart of the gathering space enclosed by a curved walkway linking the building mass with the river.The main aspect of the project is its adaptability to seasonal changes in water levels and vegetation and inclusivity of nature within a public space. Proposed contours adapt to flooding and inundation of the site during monsoon, which brings fertile soil, amplifies native vegetation growth and attracts numerous shorebirds. Slender metal poles along the walkway provide safety while also creating perching opportunities for birds.

The transparent building acts as an umbrella for public gatherings and an information center with a permeable façade maintaining river views. The height of the building ensures visibility of the public space. The redevelopment also incorporates structural reinforcement, erosion control, engaging exhibition spaces and a responsive landscape that preserves the site’s historical character while creating a serene and inviting public environment.
